The story

KolliBerri is produced at Kollibyle Estate, a 70-year-old family-owned coffee farm in Mudigere, Chikmagalur, Karnataka.

The coffee is grown under native jungle and shade trees at elevations ranging from 914 to 1,035 metres above sea level. The varieties include S795, No. 9 Chandragiri, and Hemavati.

Only ripe red cherries are selectively handpicked during the November-to-February harvest season. The coffee is pulped, washed, sun-dried on patios, rested in parchment, and graded at the curing works.

KolliBerri is roasted to a medium filter profile and is available as whole roasted coffee beans in 250 g packs.

The farm and producer

Kollibyle Estate is located in Mudigere, Chikmagalur, within the Western Ghats.

The estate is a family-owned enterprise with more than 70 years of coffee-growing history and is run by women from the family’s third generation.

Ms. Pranathi Shetty is identified as the estate’s planter and KolliBerri grower.

The estate covers 48.58 hectares, of which 44.53 hectares are planted with coffee. Arabica occupies 32.39 hectares, while Robusta occupies 12.15 hectares.

The estate catalogue records 36,700 kg GBE of Arabica and 18,000 kg GBE of Robusta.

Process

Only ripe red cherries are selectively handpicked in multiple rounds during the November-to-February harvest season. Green and overripe cherries are excluded.

The cherries are pulped within six hours of harvesting. The outer skin is removed while the beans remain covered in mucilage.

The coffee is then thoroughly washed to remove the mucilage.

Following washing, the coffee is sun-dried on patios for approximately 7–10 days, depending on weather conditions. The target moisture content is 10–11%.

The dried coffee is stored in parchment for a resting period of approximately 4–8 weeks.

At the curing works, the parchment is removed and the green coffee is graded by size, density, and defects. The coffee is also hand-garbled and colour-sorted.

The coffee

This washed Arabica coffee includes S795, No. 9 Chandragiri, and Hemavati varieties.

The estate also cultivates Chandragiri, Hemavathi, and Peradeniya cultivars across its wider coffee area.

The coffee grows under shade at elevations ranging from approximately 914 to 1,035 masl. The estate describes its location as approximately 3,500 feet above sea level.

Its tasting notes are plum, grapes, raisins, and brown sugar.

What to expect in the cup

Smell the grounds first, then look for plum as you sip. As the cup cools, brown sugar usually becomes easier to notice.
